IMPORTANT: Welcome and How to Listen to The Great Health Debate

First off, welcome :-)

This is going to be an amazing and educational event, so I hope you’ve already booked February 6th-13th, 2011 in your calendar!

In this post, I’m going to explain simply how to listen and participate in The Great Health Debate.  The good news for everyone is that we’ve made it as easy as possible to make sure you can listen to this event.

Here’s what to do…

1. Bookmark this page. This page is where all the calls at 8:00 PM EST / 5:00 PM PST starting February 6th until February 13th will be posted for you to listen in, so you’ll want to make sure that you remember this address.

2. Be active. Your thoughts are important! Please be sure to post your opinions in the comment box with the post as the event rolls along.  You will be able to post while you’re listening to the call, so you won’t have to worry about stopping and starting the lectures.

3. Be nice. I understand diet is a very emotional topic.  So all I ask – when you post your thoughts about the call or an expert opinion – is that you’re nice about it.  Dissenting opinions are welcome.  Name calling, hurtful comments and cursing is NOT.

4. Tell a Friend by Email or Facebook. Telling a friend about this event is easy and by doing so, you may help them change their health.  All you have to do is click on one of the buttons to the right that say “Like Us on Facebook” or “Tell Friend by Email.”  Once you do that, just follow the instructions.

5. These calls will be available here for 24 hours after the initial broadcast time. After that time, the call will be taken down.  If you want lifetime access to these lectures, please be sure to click here!

6. To get started, why don’t you introduce yourself by adding a comment now telling us what you want to learn from this event? All you have to do is click “Click Here to Comment Now!” or just scroll down to the bottom of the page and find the comment box if you don’t see that text.

That’s about it!  Please check back on this page in the next few weeks because  we’ll be adding more experts as we get closer to the start of the event.

Live Awesome!

  1. Hi Kevin, this is going to be awesome. Really looking forward to all the experts giving us great information. I would like to address The Vegan Diet. How do we supplement for our Vitamin B’s,especially B12 and other nutrients that come from animals? Thank you for organizing, hosting and being an expert too! Love and Gratitude, Jan.

    • mary rose says:

wow!! how exciting I want to share this with everyone I know. My interest are super foods and how to transist from a s.a.d. diet to a super rawsome awesome diet Love and Light and Triple the gratitude always mary rose maui Hawaii

  2. HawaiiAna says:

Thanks guys! No matter how this turns out, this was an AWESOME idea and it was quite courageous of you to turn it into reality. Very, very inspiring!

  3. Jaimie says:

I really can’t wait! I been trying to study alot about health foods for a few years and have gained much knowledge(but I could always use more!) and really want to here what others are saying to see if maybe their is even a better way for me to eat’ I also am looking forward to listening to both sides and am in agreement with both sides! am mostly vegan80% but I think seafood, fish and dairy from goats and sheep can be benefical’ So I thank you for this Kevin! I am so glad your doing this its really going to make a huge difference in so many peoples lives! I will tell everyone I know’ This is no doubt going to be huge and I believe people will be talking about it for years to come”’

  4. suzanne says:

Having been vegetarian for 30yrs. (a bit of that time vegan, raw) I am now eating wild salmon occasionally. For those who espouse eating animal products something has to be said about the plight of animal suffering from the want of eating flesh. I put it out of my mind and a part of me says its wrong. Would I kill that fish? NO! But would I if I was starving to death – probably yes. I fear that as long as there are meateaters many animals will continue to endure cruelty. If more of us became vegetarian less animals would suffer. (acknowledging that dairy animals may suffer also depending on farm).

  5. Emily says:

Thank you so much for spending the time to put this together and posting this and making it available for free!

  6. Jamison says:

Can you explain the role of conditioning/learning and health.

Could you elaborate on breathing and how one can condition deep breathing. Should you only breath through your nose?

  7. Jamison says:

If you could create the perfect environment for healing, what would it be?

  8. Satori says:

I’m so excited for this event!!!

  9. Patrycja Nowak says:

I would like to find out how all the other experts relate to the low fat raw vegan diet, therefore a 80/10/10 representation is a must to be objective (Harley DURIANRIDER will definitely agree to take part if you ask him). Many thanks!

  10. Boele says:

Wow, what an exciting opportunity! I am from Holland, and the US is far to far away to join all the events and festivals you have over there. But this event is in my reach! Thank you so much for making it available for us all! I can’t wait!

    Boele

  11. There will be lots of great information from these well respected people. i cant wait and i hope alot of new comers show up to listen to these things that may have never been heard before. THANKS!

  12. Scott says:

Technical Question: My ISP limits me to a TOTAL of 200 Mbytes per day. Sometimes I find that these kinds of events are very data intensive and I get shut down in the middle of the event. Is this going to be a possible issue for me? And if so, is there a way to listen to a lower quality (and less bandwidth intensive) feed? Thanks, Scott

  13. F. Antonio Busby says:

I live on a tugboat in the Houston ship channel. We all eat meat, dairy and we are all out of shape. i’m wondering if it’s not a better idea to go raw or vegan? Maybe this will help me make a decision. Thanks!

  14. Steve says:

Will these discussions also address dietary supplementation? I think we can all agree that the “perfect diet”, whatever that may be, is largely out of reach for most of us due to inadequacies of our food supply chain. Thus, in addressing our basic nutrient requirements, and the ever-present and growing list of environmental toxins, supplementation may hold some importance. It is always advisable to meet these dietary needs through whole foods, and realizing this is a “no-pitch” event for any specific products, I hope that guidelines of “superfoods” or even ordinary foods as well as herbs will be discussed that help to achieve optimal health in our challenging times.

  15. Sharon says:

Thank you for doing this… I started with the Raw Food Challenge last year and have been regularly enjoying green smoothies and organic foods… I enjoy a varied diet but am finding that more and more the central core of my eating is a large daily raw vegetable salad. My husband, who has had chronic multiple sclerosis, for the last 24 years is becoming more enthusiastic about raw food as he is feeling better and showing some improvement with more raw food added to his diet. We are interested in learning more and continuing our pursuit of better health.

  16. Rebecca Samanci says:

Hope I will be able to watch this from Goa.

  17. Stacie says:

There is so much information available. I’m hoping that, instead of just getting more confused by more information, I’ll be able to make a decision on the right path for myself and my family! I have 2 toddlers–can we flourish on the same diet, or are our needs different?

  18. Jeri Reid says:

Looking forward to these fascinating conversations! Health and wellness has many breeds… Thanks for putting this together Kevin!

  19. Donaji says:

Thanks a million for putting this together. I’m very excited as I’m a newbie in the raw food lifestyle.

Questions: My questions are mainly about supplements. Besides Vitamin B, and D, what are others we need regardless of diet?

Do we REALLY need probiotics, fermented foods, seaweed or can we just as healthy eating a simple but diverse raw diet? (organic and in season)

And last, is it true that some vegetables are better slightly steamed than raw?

Thanks again, I’m looking forward and I’m spreading the word.

  20. Chris says:

Hey thanks so much for doing this Kevin. I’ve wanted to see something like this for sometime now. There is so much conflicting information out there. You’re right though, to see this live with audience participation would be off the hook. Again just want to say thanks and I’m really looking forward to this. This is desparately needed in the health and diet world.

  21. Jessica says:

I wonder how much metabolic typing can account for the different types of diets that have been successful or not for so many people. In other words, those who thrive on eating meat are protein types and maybe would benefit the most from the diet Sally Fallon recommends, while those who thrive on a vegetarian type diet are more carbohydrate types, and probably would not. I feel like this sometimes gets left out of the discussion, as the experts try to convey what they think is the ultimate diet for everyone. Maybe the truth lies in the fact that there is not one diet that is right for everyone. We all need to listen to our bodies and discover the foods that make us feel and function at our best. I would be interested to know what some of these experts think about the importance of eating for your metabolic type. Thank you for putting this event together.

    • Jaimie says:

I totally agree with you that makes alot of sense and I been wondering myself about that’ There is many ways of eating and many people respond differently”’ This is a truth”’

    • valerie says:

Totally agree with this. I was vegetarian most of my life but raw/vegan did not work for me. I loved it in my mind and my mouth but not my colon. Actually developed ulcerative colitis! Am seeing an acupuncturist weekly now to help with that and trying to add warm, nourishing foods that are still nutrient dense. I am thrilled to hear from ALL avenues. As we journey through life I think we have different needs…as a teen I was in need of different foods than now as a post-menopausal woman.

    • AJ says:

I too have become very confused regarding what to eat. I tried vegetarianism but when I got pregnant I began absolutely craving meat. I would hope that this forum will clear up the confusion. My question is: If a vegetarian/vegan diet is optimal for humans, why then would one need to add supplements such as B12 and others?

  22. There is a huge need for verifiable health and medical information.I wish you well in this venture.

  23. Karen says:

When the Universe opens its doors it truly opens them wide. I have been on my healing journey since 1994 but did not go full force until 2007. In my research, I have found so much information and weeding out what I truly needed has been a process. David Wolfe and Daniel Vitalis have been a great source of my recovery in this journey. I am so excited to hear Daniel speak about returning to the ancient ways of eating. I to have discovered this knowledge. Oceans of much love and light to The Knowledge Makers moving and shaking here in 2011.

  24. James says:

So many conflicking views coming together and so many questions from so many people this is not to be missed. A few posts above this one Jessica mentions ‘metabolic typing’ I would also be very interested to hear about this. I was vegan then raw vegan for 3 years and struggled with it, I box and train with weights but during those 3 years I could barely do either properly…my strength and stamina suffered in a big way, my wieght dropped, bowel movement became irregular and I looked awful, then I started to eat fish and eggs again and haven’t felt this good in ages! Bowel movement regular, fit and strong again..Happy days.

  25. Michael says:

Kevin …Appreciate what you are doing for us. Look forward to hearing the different thoughts on diet explained. I would love to hear more about the science backing up all the claims and less anecdotal. The best person in this regard I’ve heard to date is Dr. Tel-Oren, and I would also love to hear him on your show.

  26. Anita says:

I was having the same symptoms as James, when I turned raw vegan. Can metabolic typing be applied to a raw food lifestyle? Is there such thing as a raw vegan protein type? Am doing well with raw dairy and eating some fish/turkey again. Bowel motions have improved but could do better, hair has stopped falling out and cognitive function is clearer.

  27. adam says:

This is a really great Idea…. Besides the knowledge of health for the individual I am curious if a topic on the health of communities, specifically how food keeps a community alive and can communities thrive without outside sources…

  28. MaryLou says:

Looking forward to this. Thank you sooo much. It is Truly Appreciated. Still trying to find my balance between disciplines. Will food sensitivities be addressed? Thank you.

  29. I’m always tired between 1:00pm-3:00pm…every day. I’ve been %100 raw vegetarian for a few years…but mostly raw plus steamed veggies, fermented kraut, steamed yams and sometimes potatoe soup…pea soup…steamed artichokes…but ALWAYS looking to eat RAW! Now I hear about the 80/10/10 diet and the messengers look so awesome…I’m very confused!!! How can I overcome the afternoon tiredness? Dr Cass Ingram said it was an Adrenal response…and I do struggle with my huge love for green tea. (and cacao…)

  30. Kim Bennett says:

Hi Kevin. I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your efforts to put this program into reality. It can’t have been easy! I look forward to each and every lecture. They all sound incredible! There are so many diets and ways of living out there I am so confused. So this will be of great benefit to me.

  31. Jamison says:

What kind of raw food would you recommend for animals? Can they adapt to a raw vegan diet?

  32. Laurie says:

What a wonderful endeavor. Thank you in advance for making this possible. Would love to see Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Conrad Esselstyn, and Dr. John McDougall as contributing panelists, too.

  33. Laurie says:

What a wonderful opportunity to learn even more about the world of nutrition. Is it possible to get people like Dr. Neal Barnard, Dr. Conrad Esselstyn, his son, Rip Esselstyn and Dr. John McDougall to take part in this unique forum? Their insights and experiences would surely add to your already wonderful lineup of experts.
    Thank you again.

  34. Bex says:

Thank you. I’m really looking forward to this debate – I might even have to get up early to hear it live. What time is it on GMT time? 2am?

As many other potential listeners, I’m getting very confused with the different diets. It was only yesterday I also found out about Gerson’s Therapy. How is this similar/different to the 80/10/10 or raw food diet? I’m hoping that it will answer many questions.

Looking forward to finding more, thanx

  35. Elizabeth says:

I am delighted that you have put together this debate. At times I have been disturbed by the contradictions of experts in the area of nutrition and health. Example is Dr. Robert Young and Donna Gates. I respect both of them and both get great results with opposite view points. I think the overall benefit is that each person is beginning to take responsibility for their own health by listening to their own body. What you are doing is empowering to the individual.

  36. Jani says:

Thank you for orchestrating the professional panel of people who have educated them selves in nutrition and the topic being so diverse under one conference …. I am eager to always learn more as everyone has their opinions and it has been confusing.. just watched the premiere documentary of Forks over Knifes … makes one want to learn more!!!

  37. Laura Lowry says:

Thank you so much for spearheading this, Kevin. I am especially thrilled to hear the debate between Dr. Young of Ph Miracle and Donna gates of Body Ecology — I sometimes struggling with their different perspectives when guiding my clients through the spectrum of dietary choices.

  38. Nicole says:

Eating a paleo diet. No dairy as per my gym’s recommendation. Very interested to see if different people do better with certain “diets” and how to determine this. Can’t wait to absorb this info. Thanks so much.
    Also interested in supplementation info.

  39. Silvia says:

    Hi all:

It promises to be exciting, it’s always good to have as much info as possible about something that is going on every single day of our lives like the food subject.

    I cannot wait!

    Thanks

  40. Barry says:

Thank’s for making this a free event. I am interested in all of the speakers and the debates. I’m not an 80/10/10′er but everyone who I’ve ever seen on that diet that makes sure to eat enough calories and exercises appears extremely vibrant and healthy. Many of these folks are extremely passionate about their diet and health as well and I think it would make sense to have a representative from that camp.

  41. Rebecca says:

I have been reading articles, and listening to webinars for several years. I have just discovered Kevin in the last month.I like your quick short and to the point webs. I let my body tell me if it likes what I am doing. Some things make a difference. I am still searching for that somthing really special. I know there are lots of good combinations and I am on the right path. I expect to learn from this event. The rest of my family are a hard sell on anything I do. I keep looking for that something that will convince them to take notice of whats going on with their health. Thanks for making this event free for those who might have a hardship to pay for this information right now. See you there.

  42. Donaji says:

I also was wondering if diet and supplementation for babies/toddlers and pregnant women are the same as a person not in that category? For example:

Are babies and really young children ok with a full raw diet (fruits, veggies, seeds, nuts)? Do they also need supplements?

And the same question for pregnant women.

There is not a lot of information out there about this. Thank you so much!

  43. Ketena says:

Thank you! There are so many opinions. This will be wonderful information. I hope I do not end up more confused.

  44. Susie Q says:

Thanks so much for including Dr. Jonny Bowden, Kev!

I think he’s one of the best health writers out there.

Props to you for getting him for the debate!

  45. Arden says:

I would love to hear David Rainoshek speak on his “Spectrum of Diet” during this debate. I think that the “post raw vegan” perspective is an important one to present. He is a fabulous resource and speaker and would bring such a “integrative” perspective to a potentially polarized discussion.

  46. Sarah says:

    Hi!
My name is Sarah, I’m 19, a vegan who loves to eat raw foods, and I have been reading and watching and listening to you guys for about a year! I really appreciate you (Kevin and Annmarie) for being so welcoming, informative, and consistent with providing information on healthy living. It has been very eye-opening to me and I continue to rely on you guys as a solid source of information.

I am super excited about this debate! I am really interested on how to thrive on a vegan diet – I know that it seems to work for Brendan Brazier – and how to get everything that my body needs. I can;t wait to hear what everyone has to say.

Thanks so music for putting all of this together. Your energy and generosity is incredible and it doesn’t go unappreciated or unnoticed.

    You guys rock! (:

    - Sarah

  47. Correna says:

This is going to be great! How wonderful to hear the full spectrum of ideas and opinions for eating healthy. While I believe in all forms of eating healthy, and that you have to choose what is best for you, I would be interested in knowing if there is a better way of eating that depends upon your body type or blood type etc. It’s well know that some people funtion better when they eat meat, and some thrive while on a vegetarian diet or even raw. But I truly believe that we all have different constitutions and what we eat affects that greatly.

  48. david says:

Should be a great show, can’t wait.
I hope the latest developments and discoveries in the world of nutrition are discussed. I hope this is one show that leaves us with some real answers and does’nt just add to the confusion that seems to be out there. What more can really be said after reading the China study ?

  49. Hugh says:

I would purchase your special if I knew it was going to be sent on real cds and dvds. Not something to be down loaded. I am computer semi illiterate. I am 71 and need time to mentally digest new concepts.

It will be educational to say the least to hear all of these experts discuss their various ideas of what makes for good nutrition.

We live in an era that makes it very hard to have good nutrition on a limited income. I would like to hear how one can have a good nutritious diet with foods available in one’s locality without having to depend upon exotic foods from all over the world.

Our changing economy is soon going to make it nigh impossible to afford all the fancy super foods from around the world.

    Hugh

  50. weslie rodgers says:

Thanks! Why is it not obvious that what the majority eat, and how they eat is so leading to ill health and harmony?

    Love, Weslie

  51. Hi Kevin,

I am a Registered Holistic Nutritionist and am so thrilled that you have put this debate together. What a fantastic idea!!! I am really looking forward to it, as the lineup of experts is world class. Keep up the great work.

    In Health,
    Briana

  52. Jakob says:

looking forward to the event and the discussion =]

  53. Gary Powell Oz says:

Hey Kevin, What are the 14 experts really up to? If people take notice of them, do you realise how much it will affect Big Pharma’s and the medical industry’s profits ? This could mean a lot of highly paid executives could lose their jobs due to less demand for their products. Bio-tech people also would have to get real jobs. How un patriotic can you be?

  54. Kayjayo says:

Thanks Kevin and Annemarie. Looking forward to this. I hope it will clear up some of the questions I have about the raw food diet.

  55. Hey Kevi: Thank you so much for making it
available for free! Looking for buy the book
    later.Herminia

  56. I’m sorry.I’m 83 years old and ingles is not my language.Herminia

  57. Linda says:

Bless you…, this is going to be an awesome event! To have so many talented, diverse & knowledgeable experts presenting is an incredible opportunity for all of us. I went raw a few years ago (for about a year) and am moving in that direction again – mainly because I’m always tired & feel my immune system is compromised – however, this time round I want to do it right – if there is a “right” way??? I want to learn how to balance it all out so that I’m getting all the nutrition I need daily…, in other words, is there a “standard” of some kind to go by outlining what I should be eating daily for optimal health and wellness?
    Love & Light to all!

  58. mark n says:

This sounds great but it seems like you aren’t covering the raw versus cooked in your lineup yet. Maybe night 6 will cover that. Thanks for setting this up!

  59. cate says:

Kevin, this forum is an absolutely wonderful, long overdue idea. i am so excited about what you bring to the table.

  60. Jan Kent says:

Hi Kevin, At 73 I am quite fit for my age but that is not enough. I want to get to know how to continue, through diet, to remain as fit ,if not fitter than I am today. I am a ” juicer ” and a ” sprouter ” but not a raw foodie. I am looking forward to these lectures very much and I hope to learn how to enjoy old age in comfort.

  61. I am really looking forward to hearing these sessions. I just graduated from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York – and I just can’t get enough of this type info!

  62. Chris says:

Why is Durian Rider or Doug Graham not on this diet debate? I would love to see Daniel Vitalis and Durian Rider debate, that would be really interesting. At least have Doug Graham representing the high fruit 80/10/10 diet. I don’t follow it personally but I think it would have been a great addition to this debate. That’s too bad.

  63. Chris says:

Also forgot to add why isn’t Brian Clement representing the Hippocrates diet?

  64. Irene says:

Four weeks ago, I switched from a standard American diet (SAD) to an 80% raw diet. It’s been a graceful and relatively easy process. With so many differing points of view, however, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
Here’s what I know for sure:
-It’s important to listen to my body to know what works for me. We’re all a little different, and what works for the “expert” may not be best for me.
    - I feel more energized when I eat raw fruits and vegetables (the fewer pesticides the better),
-My body loves a green smoothie in the a.m.
-When I drink a green smoothie, I don’t have cravings.
-I will have to be tested in the future to know if I am deficient in anything, and adjust my eating habits accordingly.
-If I am eating 80% raw and I decide I want a piece of meat or a decadent dessert, so what? No big deal. I choose to give myself wiggle room (and so far I haven’t wanted any of these).
-staying hydrated feels good, so I drink lots of water with lemon
The most important thing I’ve come to appreciate is the healing power of food: in just four weeks, my lower back pain has disappeared, the pain in my right knee is gone and I have more energy. I look forward to having blood work done to determine whether sugar and cholesterol levels are now within healthy limits. Wishing you all the best on your journey! 65. Carl says:

Awesome work Kevin. This looks SOOO good!!! I have been a Vegan for about 8 months. Veganism just seems so right from the environmental perspective, from the animal rights perspective, and even probably from a spiritual perspective. However, I still have some MINOR doubts, (and I emphasise the word minor) about whether it is best for our health. The ONLY potential issue I can see with Veganism, is if Homo sapiens truly does need to eat some animal-based foods to maintain optimal health. If we do, then the whole Veganism concept needs to reappraised, and I would probably have to step back to a position of being an “as-compassionate-and-ethical-as-possible omnivore”. At the moment, it seems to me that (apart from Vitamin B12), we do NOT need to eat animal products, PROVIDED we eat the right types of plant-based foods in the right proportions, and so on, and so on. If we DID need to eat animal-based foods, then how would we explain Carl Lewis who himself says his best performances of his ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL athletic career were when he was in his early 30s and Vegan? And of course there are countless other Vegan performace athletes who are shining examples of humans living without animal foods in their diets. But I know there are other ‘experts’ who see things differently, (Joseph Mercola is one), and I am therefore very keen to hear the ‘experts’ views about Veganism vs. Omnivorism, etc. I’m really looking forward to it!!!

  66. Basha says:

Eating for health is truly a life-long journey in personal responsibility to get educated, and to keep what works and let go what doesn’t. I am 64 and feeling better than I ever have, want to hear Sally Fallon as I am learning about and trying raw milk, fermenting vegetables, feel that portion control has been vital, as eating lots of raw vegetables, some cooked vegetables, some fruit, grass-fed animal products (small amounts). Drinking nettle tea. I feel peaceful and happy eating this way. I’m looking forward to all teachers.

  67. jacob zero says:

hi. i was hoping that more than a few of the speakers would comment on how religious and belief systems factor into what human search to validate as good food for the body. this would effect how each specific person feels about eating what they choose to. if not understood i will go out of my way and stress that the theory of evolution is something that is believed and not TRULY substantiated. i’m not a creationist nor an intelligent design-ist, but simply a fervent disbeliever in evolutionary theory as there are no indisputable transitional fossils in the record. i feel that this issue is central to any discussion on health. thanks very much

  68. Robert says:

    Brian Clement please!

  69. Kraig says:

    Thanks for doing this!
I’m a personal trainer and family man so I’m really just looking for more information to share with my family and clients. More importantly, I want to be confident that the information I AM sharing is correct and helpful…otherwise who cares?

  70. Barb says:

I’m passionate about learning all there is to learn about nutrition; various dietary approaches, organics vs techno-ag, foraging and wild-foods, fermentation, raw, etc… I love the energy and enthusiasm expressed in the preceding comments, and look forward to this undoubtedly lively and informational debate – - thanks in advance!

  71. Peggy Pilitsi says:

Hi from Greece. Thank you so much for this free event. I am 41 and I’ve been experimenting from my 20s with mediteranian, vegetarian, vegan, Dr. D’ Adamo’s Blood Types Diet, and these last years with supplementing and super foods. I am interested in diets for babies and kids too, and also I’d like to listen to a representative of the Blood Types Method. I’m thrilled waiting the event. Thank you all for making this possible.

    Best Wishes

  72. Shell says:

very interesting topic. i live in NJ and try to keep to the vegetation that grows here. I believe that what ever area you live in , it is important to first eat those things that grow naturally where you live so that your body is in harmony with nature as those people did where they lived.

  73. Christina says:

Thank you for this event. The only thing that worries me a bit is that I will still be confused after all the diferent presenters views are given. There is way too much varied information available – it is enough to make your head spin! Anyway…great idea!

  74. clara says:

I am grateful for this series because I am in a place where I eat macrobiotic, raw (vegetarian), raw (dairies fish and meat), vegan, depending on the mood, the season and the country I’m visiting. The only common denominator is I eat organic when possible. I am also a big fan of the Body Ecology Diet. Lots of fermented foods. I’ve started to have some ethical issues with eating animal food, especially diaries, and would love to find our more about what they do to the babies of milking animals in order to get the milk. Do they usually still get their mother’s milk, or do they get separated at birth and given formula. Also, I have doubts about a vegan diet meeting all my needs as a nursing and sometimes pregnant person, and need more clarity in this regard, because on an ethical level, I’d love to be vegan.
    Many thanks.

I really appreciate this gift. Any time we can get information this important for free is a blessing. I would truly like to know more about feeding our children. Some of us have very limited resources and do the best we can to prepare raw and sometimes cooked fresh unprocessed foods. I also would like to know why I can’t seem to process nuts and seeds or grains at this point. I’ve got severe tinnitis and so does my 10 year old son so I’m guessing it’s something we’re lacking. We don’t eat the same foods so I’m having a problem tracking the deficiency. Thanks again for all the great information.

  76. Dusan says:

Hi, and thank you for organizing this very exciting and informative event!

It would be great if some of the participants talked a little about death of Herbert M. Shelton and T. C. Fry and why they had both suffered some serious ailment prior to their death. This is very important to understand as they were both hygienists (eating mostly raw vegan diet).

It would be also worth mentioning the very early death of Sylvester Graham, one of the pioneers in the vegetarian/whole food movement.

Is there evidence that tells us what they did wrong and how we can avoid the same mistakes?

    Thanks again!

  77. Bob Morgan says:

I would be interested to get some information on one area of disagreement. On the one side you have a couple of well known people in the raw vegan movement – Frederick Patenaude and Doug Graham – both feel that it is important to keep fat quite low and high fruit consumption is a good thing, even going so far as to say that fruit does not play a role in encouraging diabetes (that from Doug Graham’s book – the 80-10-10 diet). On the other hand are other well known advocates of the raw vegan diet such as Gabriel Cousens and David Wolfe who encourage more fat consumption, and at the same time Dr. Cousens discourages a lot of fruit consumption by diabetics, and lists those fruits which are o.k. and those which are not. Both groups are raw vegan but their ideas about fruit and fat differ. Fred Patenaude has stated that he was a disciple of David Avocado Wolfe at one time but David Wolfe’s ideas got him into health troubles. Now Frederick and his wife Veronica travel the world looking for great sources of fruit among other things. They are actually doing that at the moment. That is the basics of what i see as a conflict in the raw vegan movement and perhaps some answers might be forthcoming.

  86. Robina says:

I’ve been playing with my food all my life. Was vegan and then started with the raw foods under Ann Wigmore in the 70s. Gosh, I’m about 95% raw at this point (with a few exceptions: bee pollen, krill oil, deer antler, lightly poached asparagus, ~1/8 cup sprouted/steamed beans/grains here and there) I’ll also include a tiny bit of salmon periodically (I do fish and ask if a fish would like to lay its life down for me–sometimes yes and sometimes no).

I’m not fanatical about this. I’m just always looking for what works best for my body and for the body of each of my clients. It is different for every body.

So, Kev, Thank you, thank you, thank you! The people involved in your event are all of my favorites! I have followed them for years.

  88. mark says:

Iam curious how the debate will end especially on eating somethings raw that should be better cooked like daniel says ,also using raw dairy products like raw milk cheese and raw grassfed cowmilk these are both packed with probiotics

excited to listen to The Great Health Debate! My hopes is to get a better understanding of what I need to make sure I have in my diet to get as close as possible to what my body needs for nutrition for the optimum levels of energy and vitality without making it complicated. A simple and effective plan of action for my health and nutrition…. Thank you Kevin for organizing this!!!

  92. Antonio says:

Should be a great debate. Protein is a big issue and hopefully we will be able to clear this up once and for all.

  93. Candice says:

We’re in the process of going raw. What I hope to get out of the series is a good overview of current thinking about health and nutrition. Thanks for hosting the series!

  94. Andrew Bellows says:

I’m interested in learning if veganism is right for everyone. My wife and I had terrible joint problems after 2-3 years on a vegan diet. We took supplements as well but vegan supplements. We’re in our 50s. I think if we tried it when we were younger it would have taken longer for the detrimental effects to occur. We read quite a bit before starting the diet and thought that the diet was based on scientific evidence, however we were very surprised with all the health problems that we experienced after a few years.

  95. Maria says:

Am very interested in most suitable nutrition for health.
A debate between differing approaches is most welcome!

  96. Velda says:

Great – I finally got to the audio. Thank you, Kevin, for brining this to us. You are so professional!!

  97. Kev,
You were just the guy to pull off the great health debate, nice job buddy. I’m looking forward to listening in and continuing to let people know about this great health debate. I don’t think it’s plant vs animal, and I anticipate this debate getting granular on a better definition for “whole foods”. And while, ultimately I think it’s about how to structure a successful diet that works for you based on the most important factors to you and hopefully the planet; I think there are basic tenants of a nutrient rich diet that work best for most people, that can then be customized by a health care practitioner, a coach and the individual them self, once they get educated for the best health results. I think this debate will go a long way to helping people do just that.
    Talk soon,
    ~JAM

  98. Anne says:

Myself and two other people I know absolutely have not been able to tolerate any of the algaes.
I wish Dr. Mercola would speak more.
I wish the doctors would address the consumption (or not) of raw, organic, grass-fed dairy products and their health benefits and any possible health concerns.

  99. Selina says:

As I am a vegan I would appreciate it if the doctors would give food sources of things we may be missing.

  100. Antonio says:

    Very tame wouldn’t you say.

  101. Marilyn says:

What do you use for patients that have hypothyroidism? I feel that the medication levothyroxine has caused me to have joint pains.

  102. Farrah says:

I want to learn more about probiotics. I had been taking a supplement called Healthforce Vitamineral Green that had many strains of probiotics. I was happy taking it, but have switched to Synergy Company recently to see if I like it better. Synergy’s green powder does not contain probiotics, and I was wondering how important it is to take probiotics. Synergy Company claimed over the phone to me that these probiotics supplements are not even viable in most cases by the time we ingest them. Is this the case?

  103. Velda says:

Question about eggs ….. I was talking to a local chicken farmer and asked him what he fed his chickens. He said he fed his chickens a mixture that has corn (not organic corn). I am concerned about eggs because of that, since most corn now is GMO. Dr. Mercola, how do you get around that? Thank you for your response

    • Jordan Lidster says:

How you get around that is by purchasing eggs from a farmer that only feeds his chickens certified organic feed which by definition will not contain “known” GMOs.

  104. Susy says:

    1)
Do you think there, here in the USA, in health circles is a tendency to become somewhat rigid, fanatic or focusing mainly on philosophy and/or academics when it comes to a healthy diet, because there is a lack of a predominant nutritional tradition?
Would you say that the average American have lost so-called “common sense” when it comes to health?
Most older cultures around the world have already found a way that has been tested over time which incorporates a good balance between physical health and the joy of eating/drinking.

    2)
Regarding spirituality, I have heard the argument that ultimately you are killing a plant when you eat it, and who is to say that plant is of a lesser life than animals?

    3)
I have personally met very aggressive vegans, and very gentle and compassionate meat eaters – do you think that the behavior of a person is just as important as the way they eat?

Thank you so much for this whole debate!!

    • Mary says:

Suzy, I think the argument that you are actually killing a plant is a poor one. If you eat animals (most of which are herbivores only, you are doubling the amount of plants eaten by vegans or more). Vegans only eat plants, not plants alone and the plants consumed by animals. But if someone truly believes this, they could be a fruitarian who only eats the parts of plants that can be consumed without killing the plant.

Regarding mean vegans and mean carnivores, some people are nice and some people aren’t. I’d say it indicates the health of their spiritual life, rather than what kinds of food they are eating.

  105. Susy says:

I love the way that both doctors/speakers so respectfully consider each others views – this is a great debate!
    Thanks!

  106. Anne says:

Please, please Kevin–could you have Sally Fallon specifically address, point by point, each issue that Gabriel brought up regarding dairy (even raw grass-fed organic) and eggs and chickens and meat generally, given that she is “the” Weston A. Price point person.
This would give everyone the opportunity of a complete understanding of both the pros and cons of both the animal and plant kingdoms as food sources.
Thank you for putting together such a fantastic event.

  107. Paulette says:

    Kevin and Annmarie,
I appreciate your big heart to make this info available to “whosoever will” listen. Excellent information. I feel very blessed to know you and what your stand for. Your integrity is shown through your actions. You are an excellent host. You allowed your guests to speak freely without interrupting them and that is a real gift in hosting. I think you have set a record on a massive scale of making this Great Health Debate open to all.
Great info. Thanks again. May the seeds you sow come back to bless you.

  108. Mary says:

Both Dr. Mercola and Dr. Cousins seem to agree that some people (about 60%) need more protein. If this is true and Dr. Mercola says that many of these people need animal protein, I’d like to know how we can do that for say the 150+ million people who need a higher protein diet, and NOT supply eggs, dairy and meat without the use of factory farms.

Also Dr. Mercola says he doesn’t pay much attention to research, but then when talking about vitamin D he cites studies. I see a lot of confusion here in what he says.

Also, Dr. Mercola says a lot of vegans can eat a lot of bad food. Of course they can, but I see much more poor eating among meat-eaters, not the other way around, and I’ve been both. There is a lot of nutrient-deficiency among the meat-eating population, perhaps much higher than in the vegan community.

Otherwise, I was very impressed with both of them and believe are coming from the right place: concern for people’s health.

And Kevin, thank you for all the work you obviously did to bring this together. Good job!

  109. First and foremost, I would like to thank Kevin and team, Dr. Mercola and Dr. Gabriel Cousins for generously giving us their time and expertise. But here is where the complements stop.

Please correct me if I’m a little off base here but that last call with Dr. Cousins sounded more like vegan propaganda rambling than useful, clinically based information. In my opinion the majority of the call was just more of the same vegan propaganda that is uttered across the internet. Why I’m referring to it as propaganda because only the side or information that is conducive to proving or backing up his point of view is told. I understand that that is what he is doing, providing evidence to back up his beliefs, but the studies mentioned don’t distinguish between milk from pasture raised animals to the factory farmed, pasteurized kind that contains unnatural and synthetic growth hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, gmos, etc.. Such milk would also understandably contain more pathological substances such as leukemia viruses, etc. because of the conditions of the animals; thereby not addressing if it’s the milk itself or the way it is processed and manufactured that is the link. Further addressing many of the studies listed by Dr. Cousins, correlation does not imply causation yet as with most vegan propaganda spinners, it implicitly does. The worst part of it all was that Kevin, you being the moderator, never interjected and just let him ramble on and on. He never even touched on KEY topics such as constitution which was a mentioned topic question. It’s a huge disappointment because I KNOW Dr. Cousins is much more intelligent that what he displayed tonight.

As for Dr. Mercola, it felt like he spent most of his time tiptoeing around the vegan community and trying not to step on anyone’s toes or make statements that he would later would have to defend himself over rather than giving us detailed, clinical evidence to support his theories and understandings which in my opinion, would have been much more valuable.

I realize the difficulty in putting something like this together and I don’t want it to sound like I’m ungrateful or only have negative input to contribute. I believe we need to be critical of what is being said and question everything so that we may get closer to discovering our own truth and path on this journey we call life. Hopefully someone else will point out all the great info presented here tonight, but I don’t feel that is my role here today.

Much thanks and appreciation for putting on an epic even like this. Looking forward to tomorrow’s call.

    Much love and support,

    Jordan

  110. Klaudius says:

I was very enthusiastic looking forward to this series of calls, but somehow I was not able to keep my attention on what has been said in the replay of the first one on 6th February.
Maybe the introductory part was too long?
Maybe the way of discussing boring and somehow not down to the point because of lack of smart moderation squeezing the meat out of the available expertize?
Maybe the lack of a .mp3 file for download and trouble with the life streaming made me being disappointed?
I am looking forward to the next calls and want to thank you much for your effort to put this all together, anyway.

  111. Kea Bardeen says:

I’d like to hear more about how juicing fits into a more long term lifestyle, especially in the winter.

  112. Johan says:

This is awesome!!! Kevin Gianni is a brilliant man for this!! Looking forward to the D Wolfe and Vitalis debates :)

  113. marge says:

I am always looking for ways to perfect my eating habits.

  114. skdivine says:

I am in Brasil and so grateful to have this flow of webinars to be able to keep updated with the current nutricional experts without having to get on a plane. The idea is great and absolutely sustainable. I enjoyed having 2 speakers on the same call with a slightly different edge. I’d appreciate hearing comments on nutricional managment of arthritis. MANY THANKS!

  115. majalehn says:

Dr Bowden mentioned the best source of Salmon available..I missed the name and details..please let me know asap..thnks

  116. Anne says:

These interviews (Jonny Bowdon & Joel Fuhrman) were perfectly spectacular!–in direct contrast to yesterday’s presentations and speakers. Wow! Loved them both and learned from both. This is exactly what was missing from last night in both content, interactive dynamics, individual presentations, information presented, etc.
Thank you so much for what you are doing. I can’t tell you how much I look forward to 8 o’clock–have gathered my family around the computer, told friends about tuning in…. what you are doing is so dead-on in necessity, usefulness and education, and exactly, I would say where most people are in terms of trying to put this big complex picture together for themselves. Bravo again!

  117. Susan Roth says:

How did I miss the debate with Sally Fallon? I thought it was supposed to be posted at a different time? Thanks,
    Susan
PS: I have found the two debates I have listened to so far to be interesting. I am glad that after the first, you give each person the room to speak uninterrupted.
I also would love to know where the “fact” that broccoli is 50% protein can be found! (Dr. Joel). Also, in the first two debates I heard, did not hear a lot of good science and facts backing the vegan/ vegetarian side. If I was listen to them live, I would have been asking for sources quite a bit. I have not been able to go back and listen again, but have been disappointed that neither the meat eaters or the vegetarians ( now I missed Sally Fallon) had not cited Weston A Price, or dispute his studies. After years as a vegetarian, with macro and vegan leanings, I am finally getting heathy again. And no, I was not a “twinkie” vegetarian- I worked as a chef in macrobiotic- vegetarian restaurant. Killing myself and reproductive system with soy for years. Could be why I was never able to have another child after I stopped eating meat. I am trying to catch as much of this series as I can- wish it was not on the busiest week so far this year. Thanks for putting this together. And to put it in a nutshell- bioindividuality is the key for considering what is best for you to eat.
    Peace, Susan

  118. gaby says:

Hi! Can humans ADAPT to any diet? Why did I feel better when I began eating meat after not having it for months even though I was supplementing with vitamins? I also would like to know why I received this e-mail today (02/09/11), after this event has begun?

  119. Ryan says:

… looking for solutions… nothing seems to be helping, Carbs or no carbs… thank you.

  120. michael westrick says:

    Thank you kevin

  121. May says:

Deep loving heartfelt thanks for putting this debate together and offering it for free to anyone interested. I listened to it all; thank you for offering me such a great opportunity to hear and learn about various approaches; very stimulating on many levels. Your kindness and hard work is truly appreciated. Cheers to all involved!
